Abstract

Conflict is central to human history. It is often the cause, course and consequence of social, cultural and political change. Military history therefore has to be more than a technical analysis of armed conflict. War in the Modern World since 1815 addresses war as a cultural phenomenon, discusses its meaning in different socities and explores the various contexts of military action.

Abstract

This volume is the result of an academic initiative organized by the Center for International Historical Studies of the University of Barcelona (CEHI-UB) in April 2012, with the purpose of bringing Military History to the center of the attention of university and historiographical debate. This choice is based on the idea that, too often, Military History is considered a technical discipline, only intended for experts. On the contrary, we think that - on the one hand - this research field cons...

Abstract

Command Failure in War looks at the failures of seven military leaders, detailing not only the strategies-gone-awry, but also delving into the psyches of those who devised them. The authors consider the causes and consequences of decision-making in war through these notable defeats: Frederick the Great at Kunersdorf; Napoleon in Russia; the Civil War campaigns of McClellan, Lee, and Hood; the British military in World War I; Winston Churchill's strategic bombing; and Hitler at Stalingrad.

Abstract

In this compelling study of leadership, Correlli Barnett examines the strengths and weaknesses of twenty leaders in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. He examines how the difficulties they faced and the political and strategic backgrounds of their days and analyses how they performed and what they achieved. Were they successful, or were they beaten down by the burden of their roles? His book considers men from very different backgrounds and from three continents in a range of modern conflicts from the Napoleonic Wars to the Second World War. They range from statesmen like Napoleon,

Abstract

In this companion volume to Western Warfare, 1775–1882, Jeremy Black takes his analysis of modern warfare into the twentieth century. As before, a distinctive feature of the author's approach is the coverage of both land and naval warfare as well as conflict within the West and between Western and non-Western powers. Beginning with the British conquest of Egypt in 1882, the book goes on to examine the Spanish–American War of 1898, the Boer War and the Balkan conflicts leading to world war in 1914. A revisionist account of the First World War is followed by a discussion of Western expansionism in the period to 1936. Chapters on the interwar years and the Second World War lead on to a discussion of the retreat from empire and the advent of Cold War. The narrative closes with the end of the Vietnam War in 1975 and a discussion of the limitations of Western military technique, doctrine and technology. Throughout, the themes of military change and modernization are brought into sharp focus and the revolutionary characteristics of the machination of war in this period are questioned. Jeremy Black offers a new and challenging interpretation of modern warfare that will be required reading not only for students of military history but for all those interested in the impact of war in the making of the modern world.
